Waikkal is a small village situated in the North Western Province in Sri Lanka surrounded by Indian Ocean, Gin Oya and Ma Oya providing the villagers plenty of sources to carry on their lives.  Most of the villagers are in the fisheries industry and also roof tile industry.  Since many decades people are involved in the tourism industry with the construction of beach properties in the Waikkal beach. 

Waikkal has been recognized the best roof tile provider in Sri Lanka for many long years and there are large amount of roof tile factories in this area where local and international guests could visit the factories as familiarization tours. 

Fishing has been the first industry that gave Waikkal people their way of life style.  There have been many styles of fishing in the sea waters as well as river waters.  Traditional way of fishing is carried out throughout the time on catamarans which is unique to this area.  Of course, it has been an attraction to foreigners and even locals could see such in Waikkal only.  Gin Oya has a length of 11.27 KM and it splitters separate ways round Waikkal and Wennapuwa area giving lot of area for wild life. Along the Gin Oya there has been a tremendous vegetation of mangrove forest situated near Wattura Resort & Spa of which is the largest in the area.

It is believed that Mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems that provide various good and services for the marine environment and people and the species diversity in mangroves is comparatively higher in Sri Lanka.
